Frequently Asked Questions & Answers
I have a new construction, when should I have this stained?
New constructions should be stained based on the moisture content of the wood after installation, rather than adhering to the common misconception that a waiting period of 6 months to 1 year is necessary for application. Every project is different, so it is important to refer to the condition and moisture levels of the materials used, to ensure optimal results.
How often should I have an existing structure stained for maintenance?
Most often, maintenance staining should be done once every 1-3 years, consistently to best protect your investment.
For proper maintenance and protection, the frequency an outdoor structure should be stained can vary according to a few things; including the amount of direct UV exposure, weather exposure, general wear & tear over time, as well as consideration for the original stain product & finish used previously (example: transparent stain may require more frequent reapplication, compared to semi-transparent & solid stains.)
Does the type of stain matter? What products should I be using?
Yes - the type of stain used, either initially or previously, is arguably one of the most important aspects to consider in both new and existing constructions.
Different types include penetrating oil-based, and film forming water-based stains; each of these also include different finishes such as transparent, semi-transparent, semi-solid, and solid.
*Penetrating oil-based stain is best utilized on unfinished new constructions, or light-to-moderately worn structures.
*Film forming water-based stain is best utilized on previously coated surfaces, or older & heavily worn structures.
How can I prolong the maintenance lifespan of my outdoor structure?
DO:
-
Be consistent, and stay on a maintenance schedule.
-
Keep outdoor structure swept clean from accumulation of dirt & debris.
-
Lightly wash any dirty areas with water from hose (without pressure).
DO NOT:
-
Drag heavy objects across horizontal surfaces, leading to scratching & damage of the applied stain finish.
-
Leave moisture-collecting objects on the structure surfaces for extended periods (example: outdoor rugs, flowerpots, etc.)
-
Use a metal-edge shovel for snow removal, or a metal rake for removal of leaves on surfaces.
